The higonokami knife was originally made in Japan starting in the late 1800s and is characterized by its lack of a locking mechanism and simple, protruding tang. The style was exceedingly popular in Japan until 1961 when blades were banned. Still, a few craftsmen carry on the tradition of making the Higo knife today. This large version features a brass handle and steel blade that will keep its edge for a long time. The extra sharp tip also allows for spearing and tearing when the edge of the blade is too cumbersome. Each blade is hand-forged with the maker’s stamp on it.
